Welcome to beck exercise physiology
My name is Katie Beck and in true PEI tradition, I’ll answer the questions I know you’ve had since reading my business name: Where are you from and who are your parents? I was raised in Alliston (John and Ruth are my parents), and am indeed related to the Montague and Charlottetown Becks. My husband and I have two children and live in Mermaid with our dogs, chinchilla, and small flock of salmon faverolles chickens.
I have provided exercise education to people with a wide variety of abilities, and motivations; from children to elite athletes. I started to see a pattern in those I gravitated to. I enjoy working with ordinary people - those who want to take charge of their own health. I find it very rewarding to help people discover their strengths and to see improvements in their health. There’s nothing more satisfying for me than to watch someone complete an exercise or movement they haven’t previously been able to do, and thought they never would. I love hearing that clients have improved their blood pressure, blood sugar, pain levels, or body composition. Clients reporting they are sleeping better, feel better about their bodies, are less anxious, and have more energy is why I believe so strongly in the power of exercise; and why I do what I do.
I have been in the exercise science field for 14 years. I completed a Bachelor of Kinesiology Honours (Cooperative) from Memorial University and then a Masters of Science (Kinesiology) at the University of Prince Edward Island. During this time, I have worked in occupational rehabilitation, ergonomics, personal fitness and lifestyle consulting, and engineering for human design. My Masters researched studied the factors of physical activity that are important to older adults. As the lab instructor for the Kinesiology program at UPEI, I also taught students exercise prescription, ran diagnostic testing for a variety of populations, oversaw research projects and became very familiar with the importance of evidence-based research to prescribe exercise. The culmination of my education was a wealth of knowledge from academia, clinical practice, and personal experience. I am so pleased to be able to offer my services to Islanders who want to take proactive steps to improving their own health.
I am a Certified Exercise Physiologists (CEP) with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP). CSEP is identified as the gold standard for exercise professionals in Canada. CEPs are professionals trained in exercise prescription for people with a variety of health conditions, in addition to healthy individuals. Some examples of my clientele include those with:
Cancer (during and after treatment)
High blood pressure
Pre- and Post-natal
Functional limitation due to injury
The comprehensive certification process of CSEP-CEPs has stringent requirements. Through this process I have acquired a 4 year degree, over 250 hours of documented, specialized experience with a variety of clinical populations, completed written and practical examinations, and earn yearly continuing education credits. This process ensures CEPs have a comprehensive knowledge of exercise prescription that is not only safe, but effective and evidence-based.
As a CEP, I have full liability insurance, a criminal record check (including vulnerable populations check), and yearly CPR/AED certifications. A complete scope of practice provides you with the assurance that your health and wellbeing is cared for appropriately.
