About Me

My name is Katie Beck and I am a Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CSEP-CEP) and Professional Kinesiologist. I live in PEI with my husband, two children, and pets (dog and chickens). I grew up in Eastern PEI, and I completed my Bachelors of Kinesiology Coop (honours) at Memorial University in St. John’s, NL. I then received my Master of Science - Kinesiology at the University of Prince Edward Island. I have worked in the field of exercise science for 14 years, 7 of which was teaching practical and technical skills to undergrads in the kinesiology program at the University of Prince Edward Island. I provide exercise prescription as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist to people with a wide range of medical conditions including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, pulmonary disease, autoimmune disease, and those with chronic pain. I have also worked with athletes, children, and people with intellectual disabilities.

In addition to working with clients, I have lectured at the undergraduate level in a variety of courses, completed several research studies on the effects of exercise on chronic conditions (breast cancer and high blood pressure), performed technical services as part of an exercise physiology research team, and have presented my scientific findings at conferences across Canada.

Though my skill set allows me to work with just about any demographic, I am particularly passionate about working with people with chronic disease. I thrive on helping people make small but really impactful changes in their lives by helping them to understand their condition and teaching them how to implement exercise as a form of therapy, or “exercise as medicine”.

I don’t believe in the “no pain, no gain” rhetoric. For too long we’ve believe that we must punish ourselves to make meaningful improvements. That simply isn’t true. I work with my clients to identify their most immediate goals, provide physical assessments to determine a starting point, prescribe exercise that is safe and relevant for my client, and provide education and accountability as they work toward completing their goals and setting new ones.

What Clients Say

“I worked with Katie at a particularly difficult time in my life - she was a trainer for me while I was doing chemotherapy treatment. I wanted to actively do something to improve my physical and mental well-being and Katie was just who I needed to help me through this time. She listened to my concerns, did a physical assessment of where I was at and found out what I was seeking in a fitness routine. She designed a personalized fitness regime I could follow each day I exercised and she checked in on me regularly through texts and at our meetings.

Katie was very compassionate and supportive and encouraging of progress made, big or small. She listened, assessed and adapted workouts each time we met. Katie focused on keeping workouts doable for me, which in my case meant, short workouts with little equipment – she always said, ‘the workout you actually do is the best one’. I would highly recommend Katie as a fitness trainer. She listens and acts on what your fitness goals are as well as what your current situation/lifestyle allows and tailors a truly individual program for you.”

— NATALIE

“I started with Katie when she instructed small group training and later one-on-one as a personal trainer. While I was in many group classes that push you beyond your limits, I most enjoyed Katie’s classes, as she was more focused on quality and form, getting the best out of the exercise.

Once I focused solely on attending Katie’s classes, I and others observed drastic changes in my outcome. Katie teaches not only proper form, but a strong focus on mind and body. I know and believe the knowledge and expertise Katie shares is beneficial to all.”

— SUSAN

“Katie is patient. She knows how to modify the exercises by doing it differently for those who are not in top shape.”

— JACINTHE

“Getting Katie to come teach me to regain mobility is the best thing I ever did.”

— MARJORIE

“Thank you so much Katie for the wise counsel over the past 5 weeks. The personalised exercise routine is what I have been looking for the past 6 years. Already in this short time I can feel a reduction in the chronic back pain I was feeling on an almost constant basis.

Standing erect has been a challenge and the benchmark I always used as a monitor of pain level was how many opening praise songs I could stand for during our Sunday service. This has increased from 1 song to 3. As I mentioned to you, it is your knowledge of the skeletal and muscular system and your willingness in sharing this that allows me to feel I am in control of the program and its results.”
